Autumn in Seattle is sunny, mild and peaceful, like I expected. Winter in Seattle is rainy, gloomy, and unpredictable, like I expected. What I have not expected is how my first quarter in college goes.
I always think there is more art in me than science, but here I find differently. During college application, I had a hard time deciding what field I want to major in. I thought about economics, communication, psychology…etc., but I never anticipated my fondness of computer science. The CSE 142, lectured by Professor Stuart really opened up a new world for me. The special honors seminar led by Alex Miller introduced more deep insights about computer science. I was fascinated by how some lines of code could construct a drawing panel, or how some coordinates could represent a more complicated object. The digitalization of real world seems so fancy. I realized that even though I was interested more in human-related topics, the magical world of computer was another realm that I would like to explore.
Another deviation from my original goal is a specific course: HONORS 205. This honors writing course covers many ranges of materials, from poetry, debate to philosophy. Professor Frances was great and I enjoyed this course, but the readings and discussion were a challenge to big for me. After careful thinking and a conversation with professor, I learned my first lesson in college: take it easy and slow. Sometimes it indeed takes more effort and more time for you to do certain things. I would like to keep reading and drafting some essays and journals, and try to take another honors writing course with Frances.
The honors abroad program in Rome intrigues me. The first time I heard my peer educator Reem talked about her experience in German, I knew this kind of program was what I want. Later on someone from the panel invited by Reem had the experience of studying with honors program in Rome, and after research I pinpointed this program for next summer’s plan. The romance, the historical richness, and the mythology, all combined as an irresistible attraction to me. During summer I took art history course and now I have the ARCH 150, both courses involve introduction to Rome culture, sculptures and architectures, After reading the book Eat Pray Love, I longed to follow the footprints of the character and make peace with myself somewhere in Italy.
There are only two weeks left for first quarter, and I wish to have no regret. A not bad overall GPA, more interaction with my fellow honors students, stepping out of my comfort zone and try new things: these are part of my wish list to cross before the end of December.
